Metal Furniture Care

Metal furniture has today become very popular. Usually available in sleek deigns, this type of furniture is made of various metals like wrought iron, aluminum and chromium plated, lacquered or stainless steel. The metal surfaces have good resistance to dirt and liquids, but prolonged exposure to water can stain aluminum and stainless steel and cause chromium plated or lacquered steel surfaces to rust. We give below some suggestions for metal furniture care.

Everyday Cleaning and Dusting
This is absolutely necessary. Dusting should be done with a soft, cotton cloth or towel. At times, use mild detergent and water but then when once washing is done, dry it completely using a dry cloth.

Thorough Cleaning
Aluminum, chromium plated and stainless steel furniture can be cleaned once in a while using a cloth moistened with methylated spirits. Avoid using solvents on lacquered metal. Smudges and smears can be removed from metal furniture by using a window cleaning liquid and a paper towel. Bronze and brass furniture should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and dried immediately.

Waxing
Waxes should be used on furniture to protect and brighten surfaces. Many different types of wax are available in the market with specific technical properties for particular applications. Take the help of experts. Whether in paste or liquid form, the wax should be easy to apply, spread and polish to a high shine. Waxing boost the cleaning power of metal products. The wax film gives the metal a pleasant, dry feel and prevent finger marks. Regular waxing prevent tarnishing of metals and maintain a bright finish.

Paint and Coating
Exposed painted surfaces can oxidize over time. Faded paint on metal furniture can be refreshed by repainting seasonally. Similarly, metal furniture should be regularly powder coated which are of various types like epoxy, polyester, nylon, acrylic coating etc. Heavily oxidized surfaces may require a treatment with a restorative product like a fine automotive polishing compound to remove the oxidation . Always avoid the use of rubbing compound on metal surface as it is abrasive and can leave fine scratches in the paint.

Fabric Care
Fabric upholstery on metal furniture, if removable, should be regularly washed with a mild soap solution. Replace fabric if it wears out a lot and is beyond cleaning and repairment.
