Leather Furniture Care

At one point of time not every one could afford leather furniture. It was a symbol of class and meant only for the elite and rich strata of society. Today leather has become very popular with different varieties of leather and similar materials available in the market. However leather furniture requires special care and care taken for leather furniture is different from that of a normal fabric furniture. Leather furniture care is easy if you get the basics right. We give below some important suggestions for taking care of leather furniture.

Regular Care
Dust your leather furniture regularly. Vacuum clean once a while. You can lightly dampen a soft cloth and wipe the surface. It is important that you pay more attention to clean all those areas which are of high usage and comes in contact with the skin like: seats, arms, front railing and inside backs.

Seasonal Care
Body oils, perspiration, skin acids, and soiling will gather into the leather over time if you don't clean it. It is advisable to clean fully twice a year your furniture. For furniture pieces kept in high use rooms, you should clean them every four months. It is advisable to apply the leather protection cream four times a year to renew the original protection level.

Removing a Stain
Stain in leather furniture can usually be removed or the stain can be minimized just by blotting with water. Often water-based liquids don't really stain the leather. You just need to blot up the liquid as much as possible but donot rub. Keep blotting until the cloth or the paper towel comes back completely dry and then let the leather air dry. If that doesn't work, you can use some leather cleaner.

Some Handy Tips
  • Avoid keeping leather furniture close to heat source as it will dry the leather over a time.
  • Do not keep leather furniture in front of direct sunlight, as sunlight will fade it.
  • Use leather furniture cleaners recommended by the manufacturers.
  • Avoid placing any sharp objects on leather. Leather is durable but not damage free.
  • Never clean your leather furniture with a micro fiber cloth.
  • Keep materials like nail polish, nail polish remover, bleach and household cleaners away from your leather.
  • Do not soak the leather surface.
