Solid wood means that all exposed part of furniture are made of solid board either softwood or hardwood. Softwood furniture usually made of cedar, hemlock, pine, fir and many other type of woods. Softwoods grow up faster, so they cost less and are more affordable. Hardwood furniture is mainly made of maple, oak, cherry and so on.

Veneers and particle boards aren't used in solid wood furniture. They are glued side by side along the edges. Plywood furniture is made of thin layers of solid wood glued over one another with grains running at 90 degree angles to produce a strong core. Now-a-days plywood panels are vastly used to make wood furniture because it is cheaper and require less technological steps.
